Frame - Whether it be a very literal frame (that went through a popular “prop” phase), environmental, or structural framing, framing with light or lack of light, they all work well to bring the viewer's eye to your subject. Framing is actually defined by Wikipedia as 'a technique used to bring focus to a subject'.

Irving Penn's style of photography was focused on fashion photography, still life, and portraits.
Techniques
Techniques
- Penn often uses the rule of thirds by having the focus of the image off centered. He also uses contrast in photographs by making the emphasis a bright and bold colour in some of his fashion pieces and most of his still life. Penn used the element of value in most of his portraits and fashion photos by uses dark blacks and light greys in contrast. Penn also uses the element of shape and form in his fashion photos using lighting to bring out the quality he wishes to emphasize. He finally uses the principle of movement by his action shots in his portraits and fashion photography.

- On June 16th, 1917, Irving Penn was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. He goes by the name his parents, Harry Penn and Sonia Greenberg, gave him. Penn passed away in his apartment in Manhattan at the age of 92 on October 7th, 2009.
- At the beginning of Penn's career, he used a 35mm Leica camera. He often used interchanging lenses and his favourite was the telophoto lens. In the 1950's he changed from Leica systems to Nikon. He liked the various adjustments that were available in this system.
- Penn most primarily used Frensel stage lights this is because it sheds even light and it blends well with edges giving the photographs a smooth stage coverage
- Some of Irving Penn's early influences were Alexey Brodovitch. He was Penn's graphics, painting and industrial arts teacher. He was the first to publish any of Penn's drawings. Alexander Liberman influenced Irving to start photograpy because he saw talent. This suggestion influenced Penn's entire career.
- When Irving Penn began his career, he was a painter and artist. He later realized that he was only ever going to be a mediocre artist so he had to find a deeper calling. He was offered a photography job by vogue in the 1940's and this started his career in photography. Irving Penn's most famous quote is "A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart, leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it. It is, in a word, effective."
